HistoryShekinah Christian Church was incorporated as a non-denominational church under the leadership of Pastors Paul and Barbara Yoder in 1984. The story is one of great faith and great victory.
It started when a local Ann Arbor church was handed over to Pastor Barbara. Its pastor, who initially requested her help with the church, unexpectedly resigned. After hearing from God to keep the church alive, Pastor Barbara and her husband took on the work and began to pastor the church.
For about one year, there were only 12 to 15 members, including Pastors Paul and Barbara. Every week services were held in a room at the Ann Arbor YMCA. One day in prayer the Lord spoke to Pastor Barbara to get a room that sat 50 people. The very next Sunday, 35 people walked into the service for the first time! Fifty people attended!
The ministry continued to grow and expand moving several locations to accommodate the growth. In 1991, the church purchased 25 acres of land on Scio Church Road in Ann Arbor. In July 1995, after receiving a word from the Lord and great favor, the church broke ground on its new site. By October the building project was underway. In May 1997, Shekinah’s new facility was dedicated. The church was miraculously paid off within the next three years!
In February 1999 the church went through another major transition. Pastor Paul died unexpectedly. Though Pastor Barbara had to fight a private war over grief, she unquestioningly understood her mandate from God. She arose and overcame even this most difficult obstacle. She believed that if God had called her, then grace would be there to overcome. As a result, the church moved forward and successfully transitioned into a new place. The continuity of Shekinah and its pastoral ministry team are a testimony to the power of faith put into action. Shekinah is God’s house. And He is in the House!
Today Shekinah is a regional church that not only impacts Michigan but this nation and the world. It is a racially and culturally diverse church committed to fulfilling the vision given by God under the leadership of Pastor Barbara J. Yoder. The values of the church stem from Pastor Barbara’s passion for God, her commitment to people in adverse circumstances, and her love for those from diverse cultures.
